GB’s women set down their marker for the upcoming wheelchair basketball World Championships by recording a ruthless and uncompromising campaign in Lyon.
The World Championships in Hamburg this August see GB Women in pool A with five-time winners and reigning champions Canada, Spain, Brazil, Australia and the Netherlands, with their dominant French showing allowing them game time against Canada and Spain.
The Brits opened their Lyon Wheelchair Basketball Competition account with an emphatic 60-18 disposal of hosts France before emerging on top against Spain, winning 61-37 and closing the group with a 53-40 win over giants of the sport Canada. GB met Spain again in the semi-finals as they stormed to the finals, running out 57-36 winners.
Following the tough Spanish test, GB faced stern competition again to earmark themselves as contenders in Germany meeting Canada in the final. But the GB women stormed to an undefeated record edging the world champions out 61-49 in the tight clash.
The side will get another chance to face Canada ahead of the championships next month, as they welcome the Canadians, Worlds hosts Germany, pool A opposition the Netherlands and Japan to the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield for the Continental Clash from 2-6 July.
